Learning Chinese to communicate with providers

Don't want to dampen the enthusiasm, but being able to speak with the provider just means learning key phrases. Unless you want to maintain a conversation with them.

Aside from the fact that Kanji characters could have different meanings than their Chinese counterparts. And that the Japanese have created their own Kanji characters not used by the Chinese.

It's Hanzi. PinYin is the phonetic spelling of spoken Chinese using Roman Alphabets. Not Chinese writing at all. I think you meant HanZI with the two current classifications; Traditional and Simplified. All the providers from China learnt Simplified Chinese. Only those with advanced education would be able to understand Traditional. Unless you were born in Taiwan or Singapore.
Agree. I was too sleepy last night to answe in depth. Pinyin is what he needs to learn to speak Chinese. Well, mandarin, at least. I don’t know how it works with Cantonese, and it doesn’t work at all for the fragments of dialects I’ve learned (work related).
I’ve had providers from northern China, Harbin, who use traditional Chinese too, but in general you’re right. In China they force modern simplified. The rest of the world uses traditional.

Mandarin only has 4 tones. Cantonese has 9.
I learned Korean first, for work. This was after years of trying to learn Mandarin and failing. Korean was much easier, and it’s proven to be a decent stepping stone for dealing with the massive difference between Asian languages and European ones. So now I’m picking up mandarin ok now, and I’m ok in a couple other languages (Hmong-Laotian and Thai. I can’t deal with Cantonese, it’s too subtle and fast.
I learned by first using online podcasts, then finding conversation buddies on wechat. Trading time with someone trying to practice English works great. There’s an old provider of mine back in China with a 10 year old son I practice with a couple times a week.

Aside from that I watched Korean and Chinese shows that are subtitled. Variety shows are great, I watch the same episode over and over to pick it up. The main programs, like Rosetta, were worthless to me. I don’t think age is too much a factor, I’m 61, and became completely fluent in Korean over the last 10 years. But it does take practice. It doesn’t work if your only practice is in a spa.

Great advice! Which Chinese tv shows did you watch?

I'd start with something on whatever streaming platform you already own and see if it works for you. there's plenty of content on netflix, prime, hulu and youtube. see if it works for you, then look at buying something like asiancrush or viki-rakuten. honestly as i am thinking about it, you'll probably find chinese shows pretty campy. Korean is vastly better, most of their shows are better quality than the best the US has to offer. Chinese shows make me think of disney TV. but it works if you're just learning the language.

YoYo Chinese on youtube has free, downloadable lessons, starts with proper tones pronunciation (pinyin) followed with the basics, numbers, greetings etc. Has a lovely young lady instructor.

You don't have to become fluent to have fun with the language. And knowing a few words can be a great ice-breaker.

Lol what are some common phrases you learned!
Here are a few that I've had no trouble making myself understood with. (I'm writing the way I hear them, not in pinyin)

"Shoo foo!" and "Whoa shoo foo" -- 'I'm relaxed/comfortable'. (I could also have written it "Shoe fu". It's the "oo" sound in "too")

"How", and "free chong how" -- 'good', and 'very good'. (the "free" is a little in the direction of "fray", but "free" will work)

"dee-dee" -- literally, 'little brother', but slang for cock
"may-may" -- "little sister"/pussy
"mee-mee" -- boobs

One step up...
"Hi joe boo jee en" -- Long time no see! (If they look at you blankly, try it with a little more emphasis on the last syllable.)

And one that I credit getting me a wonderful HJ with UTC roaming from a pretty young thing at a Northern California spa that I couldn't tell was legit or not:

"Whoa boo hi-she-oh" -- "I'm not shy" (said while taking off the draping immediately after the flip. -- She completely lost it laughing.)

My list of go to phrases:

Wo ai ni - I love you

Wo shau ni - I miss you

Ni shau wo ma? - Did you miss me?

Ni han pyowlyang - (pee-yow-lee-yang) - a little bit of a tongue twister, but worth knowing - you are beautiful

Han Bong! - Perfect! (emphasis on BONG)

Ni shi di yi ming - you are number one.

Wo shi wan chi ......... - I want to eat.........

Mao (actually pronounced "mo")- cat. Construct your own sentence with "Wo shi wan chi........" "May-may" will also work but is less subtle than "mao". "Wo shi wan chi mo" will get you a laugh as you descend.

Wo ge ni han bong! anmo - I will give you a perfect massage. That one works really well if you are the giving type of guy and have paid attention to the great massages you have received in the past. I think experienced mongers usually give great massages because we put the best techniques together from all the ones we have had.

This is all written as phonetically close to what I think it sounds like, also not pinyin. I cannot speak the language yet, but these phrases are great to know.

Slang for dick and pussy are
xiao didi and xiao meimei. Ass is pigu..Providers get a laugh when I use these words, but apparently it’s not something you would use outside the spa

Xiao DiDi and Xiao MeiMei means "little brother" and "little sister". Common terms of endearment.

PiGu is the standard term for the butt, so it's used often. For example: Da PiGu simply means "big butt".

Yes they are common terms of endearment when used in the right context, but not when referring to someone’s private parts

As long as a provider understands words like
Massage, hand, boom boom and good tip, then I’m good to go. If she gives me a good rub, tug or boom boom, she’ll earn herself a good tip. Why complicate things?

I might get some shit for this but here goes: They fuckin moved here. THEY need to make more of an effort to learn English. I've seen girls here 6 months and have a great understanding of OUR language. I've seen girls here 6 years and can hardly speak any English cause they are lazy!! I have leaned some Mandarin to get by and be "Cute" to some of these women. It's really up to them not us. How much of a pussy are you that you make a big deal about this? This language is SO hard for us to learn at most of our ages. Not so much the other way around. So , yes it's fun to fuck around and learn some things. But to be fluent - not in our lifetime.

You are right, they should learn English. Some make an effort and really try. Some are very arrogant and have no interest in learning. And, making the kind of money they are, why bother to learn anything?

I do think it’s a good idea for us and anyone to learn a foreign language. It broadens your perspective and gives you empathy towards not just spa workers but anyone whose native language is not English and they are trying to survive in America.

Why? Because some of us like learning new things. Is that so hard for you to understand? (You yourself said "it's fun to fuck around and learn some things.") And we find using our new words amusing. My interest in Mandarin has nothing to do with a provider's ability to speak English, other than giving me a little more appreciation about how hard it must be. Most of the providers I see are actually quite good in English.

You ask "How much of a pussy are you that you make a big deal about this?" I ask, "How much of a jerk are you to criticize someone for trying to learn a new language?"

I realize I have no hope of becoming fluent in Mandarin. That doesn't mean someone else on this site couldn't, if they have a big enough interest in it.

Yep, I confess to a struggle with the English Language as well. That being said, if I lived in a country, if I worked with a group of people and/or if I lived with a foreign language person/people, then I would make the effort to learn the language as a matter of respect. If a foreign language person is living in an English speaking society, I would and do make every effort to help them learn and practice the predominant language of the society in which they live.

You may not believe me or agree with me, but that is OK, you would be doing these women much more of a service helping them speak English than you will by learning Chinese.

Most providers are absolutely lazy about learning the language and we do not do them any favors by not speaking with them at all when we visit them for a session.

When they tell you they no speak English, do not believe them, most of them are proud women who are embarrassed because they have not MASTERED the English Language.

Most of these women have children who have or will speak the English language in school whether they are in the US or China. Tell them it is in their best interest to know the language better than their children especially since they are living in an English speaking country.

Not everyone moved here. There's a large group that only stay here on Visa, and only plan on making as money as possible while they are here.

Yes, you are right. You will take grief for this because you are being a jerk about it. It would be good for them to learn English, and it would be good for us to learn some of their language. Both English and Mandarin are among the more difficult to learn.

I find it darkly humorous that you decry some here as pussies for trying to learn a little Mandarin, and also say it is so much harder to learn. So by your own logic it is YOU advocation the easy way out by not learning any Mandarin. WHY are you advocating for the pussification of the men on here?

The truth is, learning a little of their language is for our pleasure. Teaching them a little English is for their benefit. Both are good things.

I don't think he should get any grief for wanting people who come here to speak the language of the country. That deserves kudos, not scorn.

I'm not necessarily criticizing anyone for trying to better themselves. What amazes me is the effort some are putting into trying to learn one of the hardest languages out there and especially the reason for doing so. You are so wrapped up in the spa life? AS CB said, you would be doing a better service by teaching these girls our language. At the end of the day its all about the money for them and they really don't care so much that you can say some phrases.
I'll say the same thing that I've said to people that work for me over the years: "you guys know every stat and number of all your favorite sports teams but you could be a whole lot better at your job. Put that effort into something that really matters, sports don't matter, getting fired does"
