Really? I'm around the same boat as you financially, standard bills (mortage, car, phone utilities etc) Then set aside for 401k, some small investments and you should have a decent amount left over to "blow" if you wanted...
Well you don't know how big his house is. If he pays everything has several kids. Pays for extracurricular activities for them. What kind of car he drives, vacations with family etc.

Really unless you get a full breakdown no way to really tell where he can pull money from and allocate it to this hobby.

That's completely valid, I mention it because I am on the latter end of your comments fulfilling most of the statement. I guess if he overreached and bought a house/car that he had no sense buying in the first place, yes his mortage and car payments would be abnormally high.

$130k salary, plus $20k bonus. I save 11% (company match 6%). Been saving since my "career" began in 1988. Earning $19k, I quit my first job with $10k in my 401k. Assets now exceed $1MM. No debt, other than mortgage and credit cards are paid in full every month.

I own modest and dependable cars (Subaru, Mazda, etc.). Salary keeps the roof over head and food on the table. Bonus pays for "extra-curricular" activities. Some of my investments are in liquid assets, so I can access them and splurge for a trip when I find someone willing to jump on a plane. Tax refund ($10k) is my secret stash, for unexpected "emergencies". Girlfriend loves elephants, so I'm taking her to South Africa. 90% of the trip is already paid off. We depart in 2020.

I visit AMPs once a week, twice tops. Also have a timeshare in DR, which I am beginning to question...it was fun for a while. DR women, are almost as delicious as Asians (crazier for sure, but too exciting to pass up). Going to DR one more time, and that's it! Wish me luck.

Pay yourself first and live well within your means.

You're savvy and fortunate. My job matches only 5% therefore I only say 5%.
