"If you discount the people who die, the death rate isn't too bad." OK, got it.

The numbers are incomplete. And the long term health effects and residual deaths are unknown. Both the number of infected people is almost certainly undercounted, but the number of "counted" deaths has also been low-balled--intentionally in some cases. But people will steadfastly stand behind highly questionable numbers that tell the story they want to be true.

I just took: number of reported COVID deaths divided by number of COVID positives here, and that gave .049 rounded to three decimals. And since both those numbers will continue to change, I put little trust that will be the final number.

But it is what the running numbers are here. One bad nursing home, but in general, no. Some very messed up situations where politics screwed over a whole set of counties and things got really bad--not just for the old and infirm.

It will be interesting how they official stats treat a person who contracts COVID-19, survives but with pulmonary problems, and dies 6 mos later from a lung issue they are very unlikely to have had save for the long term COVID pulmonary problem. Is that a "COVID death"? Stuff like that will drive the final percentage up or down.

By the way: you are more concerned about rabies? How many people near you die from rabies in a year?
Your original post cited a 4.9% mortality rate, not .049%. Big difference.

Where did I suggest we “discount the people who die”?

I think you misunderstood.

As far as my reference to rabies-thats my point. Im MORE concerned about rabies, which is.... not very concerned. Just exaggerating to make a point. Its quite common

Your whole point was, if you are not in a high risk area or high risk group, the danger is low. Well of course if you cull out the higher numbers, what will be left is low.

And if indeed you are more concerned about rabies, that is very foolish. Sadly, the "it's all about ME" mindset is why we are getting spikes in the numbers. Not so much because states are reopening, but because too many people are being stupid about it. Follow the damn rules people, and we can get back to living a reasonable facsimile of what life used to be. Be stupid (i.e. college parties, beach crowding, MAGA conventions, idiots who don't wear masks and crowd stores, bars that see how many people they can jam into happy hour, mega churches who fill every seat in every pew, …..) and this will go on for a long time.

Oddly left out protests too.
Nope. Add protests to the list. And any other large gatherings. Same issue. And sorry, I didn't realize beaches, bars, and churches were political. Should I say super markets, theaters, and nail salons? Is that apolitical enough? Now care to actually address the issue, not your trigger reaction? Yes, my post was anti-stupid, no matter what the political persuasion--and there are stupid people in all camps.

Nope-re-read the post. Still dont see any references to protests. Only the MAGA-shit. Which is fine, but there is another thread for the politics.

You still don't see it because the time limit to edit is set at a very small 2 minutes. If I could have I would have gone back and added it. Which I did acknowledge in my second post.

It's not a political post--it's a dumb people in big crowds post.

So you acknowledge that it wasnt there until it was pointed out that it wasnt there.

I dont care if anyone wants to be political - go crazy. Just pointing out that there are different threads where you can rant about "maga" all you like. I suspect a good number of people seek escape from political posturing.

Take whatever precautions you feel necessary to take regarding Covid 19, but if you're very concerned, then your best bet is probably to stay home.

Also, your inability to differentiate between the point that people have contracted the virus with ZERO OR MILD symptoms and therefore never sought a test, and THEREFORE would dilute the number of people who've contracted the virus vs my wanting to "cull out higher numbers" leads me to believe that you seem to lack the ability or the willingness to comprehend what you read.

Why yes, I freely and immediately acknowledged it--quite a few posts ago. There were many many other large compact gathering examples I could have use (COSTCO, playgrounds, idiots at stores who think it's a 6 millimeter social distance, idiots who walk up and hug casual acquaintances on the street, etc. but thought that using a variety of diverse ones would have gotten the point across. It does seem you were triggered on one word instead of the point I was making: the stupider people act, the longer the situation will last and the more people will die. And people who need to be out for work, food, etc., should be able to go outside and expect others to be reasonably responsible in their actions.
