I’m not surprised they could be moving. Years ago that whole 309 corridor had a spa in every unused commercial building between Coopersburg and Quakertown. Suddenly they dried up, but Hilltop stayed. I never knew how they escaped. Maybe they’re feeling a little heat now. Or maybe they just don’t get it the kind of traffic they think they’re going to get in Allentown.
The spa business in Allentown, according to many of the old tried, and true establishments, is becoming so dilute that they can’t make any money. There seems to be a new spa popping up in Allentown every six months. There used to be just a handful of established spas; now I lose track of all the new ones. But there are still the same number of mongers with theoretically the same amount of money to spend, just spread out over maybe 12 spas instead of 6. Add to that the “massage-industrial complex” that has taken root in every cheap hotel in the valley. So it’s not as profitable as it once was.
I’m just afraid that there’s going to be so many spas in Allentown that they will die from their own overpopulation. Or, some politician is going to seize the moment to make a moral crusade right before an election. It’s so much easier than fighting real crime. I’m not arguing for a slowdown in new spas, since short term it’s a bonanza for us, I’m just pointing out the reality of the long term possibilities.
