I wanted to make an appointment with them as a first timer, and they replied in text asking for photo ID.
I asked if I could use a reference from RS8, which I’ve been to before, and they said “no, we cannot do reference check”
Does this amp not take references? How are references supposed to work??

Everyone doesn't take references. Every MP/agency doesn't work with each other so their word doesn't mean anything to them. You have to decide if it's worth sharing your picture ID and as your OP alludes, you're not entirely comfortable with the prospect of it.
