Bought a medium bottle of Johnnie Walker Gold , and a six pack of Red Stripe for my self and two buddies
They never had it before, and were instantly in love,
20 minutes later we were in a backyard in Carona, Queens with 1 big bottle, a rotisserie chicken , lots of pepper and ketchup and some Roti's.....I desperately tried finding some amps, but forgot my burner phone was home.....crap....next thing I know it's 3 am and I'm in bed hugging a pillow real tight.....good ole Johnnie

Some of the rules associated, first, we start with the big player.

Scotch

Has to be produced at a distillery in Scotland from water and malted barley (to which only whole grains of other cereals may be added) all of which have been:
  • Processed at that distillery into a mash
  • Converted at that distillery to a fermentable substrate by only endogenous enzyme systems (this means only enzymes produced by the malt itself, no added enzymes)
  • Fermented at that distillery adding only yeast
  • Distilled at an alcoholic strength by volume of less than 190 US proof
  • Is fully matured in an taxed warehouse in Scotland in oak casks of a capacity of 185 US gallons (or smaller)
  • Aged in those casks at least 3 years
  • Retains the color, aroma, and taste of the raw materials used in, and the method of, its production and maturation
  • Contains no added substances, other than water and plain caramel colouring
  • Comprises a minimum alcoholic strength by volume of 80 US proof

It’s a fun hobby.

Tony one important point to add: only GENUINE Scoth (as detailed above) can be called "Whisky." (without an "e"). Otherwise the term "Whiskey" (WITH an "e") must be used.

A little too crunchy granola for me. I’m all about recycling, heck, that’s what amps are all about, recycle the ladies! Hehehe.
I'm big with recycling and won't for a second throw something recyclable in the regular garbage.

When I was drinking too much, my recycle can looked like the dumpster of three liquor stores.

I'm getting old and would at least like to leave this Earth in better shape than I found it.

Not quite, Whiskey is used to describe the Irish and American brands. Whisky is what everyone else makes. Look at any other country, it is spelled without the “e”. When I was doing classes, pre-COVID, this would always come up. As would the fact that, YES, Bourbon is a whiskey. When you can do it again, go to a bar, and ask to see a whisky list, or ask what whisky they have. Bartenders will show you Scotch, Irish, and sometimes Canadian. One bartender came to my class and argued with me. I invited him, and everyone there that day, back the following week for free, and had a friend from Ireland, who is the Whiskey Ambassador for Kilbeggan Distilleries to come talk. Now the bartender and I are great friends and he even started educating people at his bar properly.

So, what do you think the #1 question I got, at every class, every tasting, and whenever I had an event around whisky? (By the way, my favorite event was when my daughter, who is a wedding photographer, asked me to do whisky tastings for bachelorette parties, those are a blast - have done 7 before COVID).

I recycle as well, and with 4 grandchildren now, I am with you 1000%. But scotch in paper cartons? Nah! I will take the bottles (and do) down to Millville, to the glass village. They grind and reuse some, and also cut me some of the bottles for vases, candle holders, lamps.

The number one question I get is “What is the best way to drink whisky?”

My answer is always the same... However the hell you want.

I have a friend who makes a Johnnie Blue and Coke (he also puts ketchup on steak). It’s how he enjoys, so it’s fine.

Me, always neat first, then a drop or two of water, then maybe an ice cube. I’ve had a whisky that opens up wit a drop, and also ones that the drop makes it almost unbearable. Experiment.

I can't imagine mixing Johnnie Blue with cola.

Has he ever indicated why Johnnie Blue with cola? He could probably enjoy such a mix with a smooth blend like Dewar's 12.

Like you, I believe to each his own. I do feel that Coke would mask any chance of appreciating expensive Scotch, thus a good standard blend would work just as well.

You’re a peat monster! Colin has also distilled a pleated bourbon, which is (the only way I can describe it) very interesting. It gives you a cloying sweetness and a peat punch in the gut, all at once. You sip, scrunch up your face, then have to sip again. I spoke to Colin and David the late last year. Get ready, they may add a Coffey still. They are trying to purchase one from Scotland.

Tony, have you ever tried Basil Hayden's whiskey?

Many moons ago, I was given a bottle. It was excellent bourbon.

As I recall, the bourbon or the distillery itself date back to the 1700s.
