I was seeing news reports on relapses in China & Japan back in January/February. Back then - people here were writing it off as "that's not how antibodies to viruses work", or - "the patients weren't fully recovered yet" and "it must've been a bad intermediary negative-for-covid test result"....

The "antibodies" was more against the case for reinfection. That was the story coming out of Japan. It'll still believed to be a relapse. If a relapse happens, the virus remained in the body, and caused another round of symptoms. The issue is the Test Kits. They are not sensitive enough to detect small amount of the virus. You can have the virus, and still come back negative. That's been the complaint because it would not detect during the incubation stage.

Actually those are false positives due to remnants of the infection that was beaten

New information already confirmed that dead viruses triggered false positives
Of course they will. The tsst is looking for presence of DNA, which will still be there even if the virus is dead. But that’s a separate discussion than what I wrote above. This virus has mutated to over 30 strains, so no one knows if the antibodies from the first strain will stop the mutated strain.

My antibody test came back negative but not sure how much that means unless the test can detect antibodies for all 4 currently known variants.

Either way I'm probably not going to hobby with randoms until at least the 2nd wave ends, herd immunity happens or a reliable vaccine comes out. So we're probably talking next year.

I'm not going back to work at the physical office or riding the subway either until some combination of those 3 happens.

There are lot of questions about existing health conditions. We're trying to feel better by saying that this happens to these other people that are overweight or have some other problem and therefore will not happen to us. I know personally a previous colleague (a professional woman in her late 40s) that passed away and my primary care doctor, in private practice, fit man in his early 50s that was in ICU for over a week and barely survived.
There is still a lot we do not know and you have to take this seriously - especially now with the good weather and opening of places.

Did they take blood from a vein?

SO If one tested positive for the virus you can still spread it or not?
And are you better off having been exposed or not?
I am confused if the answers are even out there

Yes. However, you can still have the virus and test negative. Like when the virus is dormant, or incubating.
And are you better off having been exposed or not?
Yes for getting antibodies, so you won’t need to wait for a vaccine. No for having to deal with the symptoms.
