Although it is possible she's not Japanese at all, her English isn't good and I was using the translator in Japanese, she understood/was able to read what the app was saying/displaying. But she also understood Chinese, when I forgot to switch it over one time.

Isn't the written language the same? I believe that's why she was would be able to read off your translation app weather she understands Japanese or Chinese.

Long story short - not the same. Japan uses some characters imported in the 8th Century AD. Many were eliminated during The Occupation and some of the vocabulary varies.

Someone above said a lot of Asians know how to speak Chinese, Japanese, & Korean. This infers that an Asian individual would speak 2 or 3 of these languages, but from my experience, this is not common.

My experience is limited but most Chinese folks I know speak Mandarin or Cantonese and probably know several dialects with that sphere. I've only known providers that have known both Chinese and Korean. Sometimes you find Japanese ladies that know some Korean or vice versa, and it's almost always because a family member is from another country.

The poster in question used the term "know," which doesn't necessarily mean speak.

Chinese was the written language adopted in Japanese and Korea until both of those countries developed their own writing systems.

Some vocabulary is understood in all three countries - words like road, bank, gold, country, love, customer and country.
