why do you need references ? How do you even get them?

Most indies require references from 2-3 other active providers to verify you are legit for their own safety. If you don’t have references, some will screen and verify you in other ways (such as employment verification, social media, etc). Some also don’t require references and you can go to them and then, with their consent, use them as your references for providers who do require references.
