I've always wondered how well it works to tip upfront...I mean, it kinda limits you on what you can ask for then, but it would be nice to get that out of the way and have a seamless experience.

If you know what to expect for a specific tip amount it normally works perfectly. Theres no interuption of service for the discussion or alhanding over the tip

I generally tip upfront as well when I know what is on the menu, what menu items I want and the expected tip for those items. This is especially true if I'm not a regular and the girl doesn't know me. For me, negotiation is a turn-off and this tells her exactly what I'm there for without either of us having to say anything. Just make sure that you're not tipping for FS when all that's available is HE.

My standard practice is to tip after if its a standard HE/HJ that is expected. I've never had the action stop for negotiation in my travels. One time I tried to tip upfront to see if that unlocked a more expansive menu. It didn't.

Exactly what I would have thought. I guess that's the risk I take.
If I tip 1.2 and only get a HJ, then the risk backfired on me.

That has happened only once to me because I usually know what's on the menu. I left the tip (1.0 at the time) on the table for her to see when she walked in. When it became clear that this was going to be less of an experience than I had anticipated, I asked: "everything?" She shook her head no and I took .4 off the table while she watched. It wasn't a problem because she knew darned well what 1.0 tip meant.
