Standard English spelling was always Columbia. Just like we spell it Brazil not Brasil, Italy not Italia, etc.
And every language does this. It's not an English or American thing. Deutschland is Germany in English and Alemania in Spanish. Polska is Poland in English and Polonia in Spanish.
People always want to disparage Americans for spelling it Columbia (I'm not saying you did that btw), but it's no more incorrect than a Colombian calling us Americanos instead of Americans.
