It's easy to see how serious misunderstandings can happen through imprecise language translation. An insulting term to one might be perfectly innocent and unintended coming from the other party.

Those of us who speak multiple languages knows this very well.

The girl probably didn't even realize that a person at the end of that translation might be quite taken aback as an American citizen with family roots perhaps going back 120 years being referred to as a 'foreigner' in his own country by a person who more than likely isn't even in the USA legally.

Probably best taken with a grain of salt.

Same here my friend. And that is the real issue. The real problem. They have gone thru much pain and experienced much bias and just keep on doing what they do, being resilient. It’s amazing, the BS they have had to put up with.

When they call me a foreigner, it really doesn’t bother me all. They usually call me by name or a nickname. I see it as all part of the fun of being immersed in an outstanding culture.

This time there was no accusation. The negativity came from you applying that term under your definition vs what was translated from what she wrote.

I would have liked to heard that. She speaking Chinese "No foreigner", and you being yourself.

Yeah, would have been interesting to see how I handled it. In my mind I would have been in ball-busting mode and wanting to reply : "listen sister, YOU"RE the foreigner, not me" but that just tosses out all chance at getting laid by pointing to the obnoxious translation.

It's more than likely a cultural thing....kind of like racism in america towards certain groups. You're not from our group so there is a certain level of miss trust. Bad experiences " too big" , "too rough or aggressive" "takes to long", "stereo type" etc. I've pretty much given up on FI. It seems it's an asian only club with a few exceptions. There are enough spasms that charge the standard $50-$80. Yesterday I went to the fast spot on 77th and Rosie and this old chick wanted to charge me $100. That's because one of my regular girl told her about my size and that I take long. Well, nobody made money with me that night. I went to the 80s got two of my regulars an handeled the business for the same price. Theres always gonna be somebody who sees that my money is green and doesn't look at me as " a foreigner" but as a client.

I think "foreigner" or "laowei" means non-chinese in Chinese language . Doesnt matter where you are from. Don't take it offensive I think.

I used precise language to say she is a foreigner ---which she is. I didn't call her a 'different race' as a substitute for the word 'foreigner'. Naturally---because they are 2 different things and are not interchangeable. .

Well we are not exactly "real" americans either so foreigner applies to us as well since Native Indians are the real Americans. We are just descendants from our ancestors who came to murder rape and take over the land.
