Route 18 South Nightmare in East Brunswick

Not sure what the hell is going on with Route 18 construction, but it was a nightmare this morning. Thank God my GPS was picking 18 South bound as being closed. It wasn't, but traffic was crawling. If your heading to GDS or any of the other spas in that area from the north, ask your GPS for an alternate route. I wasn't paying attention to the names of the roads I got directed to, but from New Brundwick near Easton Ave and Franklin Blvd, I got routed through some side streets that ran parallel with 18, and put me on 18 about .25 miles from GDS in the South bound lane.i sat for 15 minutes and only traveled a few 100 yards. I finally weaved through the parking lots and side streets, to get to the light by Lowes to make the U turn to get in the north bound lane.
When I went home, the North Bound lanes were fine, but 18 was backed up all the way into New Brunswick by the George Steet exit by the university. Bases on all the construction cones and barriers set up in East Brunswick, this looks like an extensive project.

I go to GDS at least once a week. I've never seen the traffic like it was today.

Been going on over a year

Not like it is now. Something is going on South of the Spa now. In the past there was a little bottle neck a little North of GDS. Now its moved North, and it was ridiculous. Traffic was so slow, that my GPS was reporting Route 18 as closed.

Perhaps you all want to go GDS after work/before going back to home and that could be one of the causes of traffic. (Pun intended)

This is nothing new, it’s a long-term reconstruction of the highway. But the gas leak didn’t help

The traffic on the road and the traffic at GDS prevented me from being able to stay. It’s an hour drive and then I’m sitting there for a half hour. I had a four hour window. It’d be great if more reviews touched on this. I tried again a different time coming from Princeton and there were so many lights but there was one just down from GDS that was insane. Took about 30 minutes just to cross 18.

Yes! It's a nightmare like never before there. Maybe it was the gas leak that someone mentioned. I have not been back yet since that day.

I looked on Google Maps on Friday though, and it still showing about a 27 minute longer drive there than usual I pick up route 18 near College Avenue or George Street.

I always avoid rt 18 and come in thru south river. or pass 18 and take tices lane to avoid that section of 18 and it's worth the few extra miles

You're coming from the Sourh. The North Bound traffic is actually much smoother in that area than the South bound.

I haven’t been to GDS, but Green Vue is nearby. The directions that Maps gives you to do a u-turn from the southbound side to the northbound side is nuts - it’s a bunch of mini jug handles in a residential neighborhood. I went to GV recently and decided to drive further south for a mile or so and find a simpler way to cross back over to the northbound. That worked out better.

You're coming from the Sourh. The North Bound traffic is actually much smoother in that area than the South bound.

I come in from the north also, I just travel NJ for work and just know how to avoid what needs to be avoided
