So I have used Textme and 2 other phone aps in the past. I had a pretty scary situation where someone I was texting found my real number through the ap and discovered who I was. It turned into a bad situation. Anyone know how that could happen? I thought that would be kept confidential.

If you are using a text app with a different number, it is unlikely that someone can find your real cell number unless you have shared it with them or they have access to your device. The text app works by assigning you a different number to use for texting and calling, and it does not reveal your real cell number to the recipient.
However, it is important to note that if you have linked your text app to your real cell number, it is possible for someone to find your real cell number by tracing the app back to your original phone number. Additionally, if you have used your real cell number to register for the text app, there is a chance that it could be linked to your account.

that’s what I did. Not sure how else to register a text/burner ap without using your real cell phone. Guess I need a burner

You can register using an email id. While signing up create account using email id. You can create a mail id only for this purpose. If you do this your cell phone is not needed for account creation.
you can use apps like textfree to register using mail id.

So if I opt "No" for sharing contact numbers, I'm safe?

One thing I noticed when using Google Voice on my main phone is that the calls I made from Voice still showed up on my main phone numbers bill/account. So that was the end of that. I started using TextNow and that doesn't seem to show up anywhere on my bill.

You're right that a call does register on your bill but the destination it shows is a fictitious one that Google creates. I may case, I called a CNJ spa and Verizon showed it as a call to New Orleans. Don't know if that helps or hurts.
