I've heard that a lot of girls have (or will) switch to an App called Line (which is Japanese). Translation capabilities are important and not sure WhatsApp has that. Then there are old standbys like KakaoTalk (Korean) and Viber (Israeli).

Yes Line is also very commonly used in Taiwan. From what I've read they are just removing the app from the store. I believe you can still manually download the app. I believe this won't affect wechat much. TikTok on the other hand is screwed. Since new users won't go through that trouble in install a app.

Depends on the restriction. Trump can easily block server access from the US. You can still use WeChat, but you’ll need a VPN.

Good riddance! Never used it as I didn’t want ‘Winnie the Pooh’ reading my communications. Remember Ashley Madison ? If China wanted, they cld do more damage to a lot of folks here in the US than what those hackers did by dumping the Ashely Madison info on the net.

But my WeChat is just a burner one with throwaway email and thowaway phone #. Certainly do enable any payment services so there is no CC and Billing addresses in Wechat for me so risk or something similar to Ashley M is low IMO. Anyway, either move to txting or Line seems like the outcome.

From reading the Exec. Order, any transaction related to Wechat or it's parent company is prohibited. Texting cannot be considered "transaction".
"Transaction" can include "use", and its core function is as a messaging app, so texting could be included. Easiest way to find out is 44 days from now and see if the app can still access the server in China, as I posted above.
