Discretion question

So to keep things private and discreet, I have used a Google Voice phone to text and talk to providers.

Sometimes I will reach out and ask a few clarifying questions, sometimes try to ask for a current accurate picture, verify menu options, etc. Sometimes these questions are answered sometimes not. The only time I ever used my real cell was about three or four years ago, when all of this was brand new to me.

I never save these conversations. As a result I’ll sometimes ask the same provider the same questions a few months after having asked the first time. Awkward, but no big deal.

But … earlier this week, I responded to an ad I saw on rub ratings using my Google voice account.

The provider answered a few questions, and then started calling me by name (first AND last). It was all fun and flirty, but she refused to tell me how she got my name. I used a phony Google account when I set everything up so I doubt it could be from that, but I do have “real” Google account as well.

In any case I am freaked out. How could this have happened?

I’ve asked and was told she would let me know one day.

Odd fact in all of this: A Google search of her number turned up no old ads or any other reference.

Weird?!!? I’m a bit shaken by this because of all the family reasons you can imagine.

Any thoughts about how this could happen?

Please spare me the jokes about Vice Squads etc. I’m really nervous about this and want to know if there are any obvious things I should be doing to better cover my tracks.
Thanks

Wow!

I would be interested to see how she did it also. Maybe she was your sugar baby who you gave names to and then turned pro?

Is your google voice linked to your real phone? It requires a real phone these days on signup but could be linked to a burner. I am wondering if she somehow got your real number.

I recall GV also has an option to show GV or your real phone when you are calling but not aware it does that for txts.

No sugar baby history. And the GV does call forward to my real number.

I’m sure there is a way to see a link between my gv and “real” Google account, somewhere.

I can’t find that link, however and I’m really confused about this. And a bit stressed.

Remember reading about that AshleyMadison data breach a few years back.

Awkward.

I googled around and it seems like it’s possible if

She knows someone at google with enough access to get to your real number

She knows someone at company that google uses for VOIP that can link your real number.

Maybe phone company will know also. GV has to connect to your real phone, perhaps your phone commonly know your GV and she knows someone working at your phone carrier.

You called some number by accident with GV then your real phone so some database out there linked your numbers cuz you called using both GV and real number. Similar to how AMP may share phone numbers (is my pure conjecture)

I think the most likely scenario is that you screwed up somehow and provided info that allowed her to look you up.

not LE related because I read that google will tell you if they were compelled to provide information to LE.

the answer is usually the simplest. You prob saw her before when she was under another name and she had your number saved. just remember no one is really that interested in any monger to go out of their way to research someone. Chill out. if she was calling your real phone, thats when i’d start to shit my pants lol

Do any of the girls (sugar babies, indy pros, agency pros) you have seen in the past know your first and last name ? Could be you've seen her in the past or she knows someone you saw in the past.

I agree that this is likely user error (me screwing up somewhere) but it is unsettling, to be sure.

Lots (probably too much) energy devoted to covering one’s tracks makes it shocking to find out it was too no avail.

My guess is that at some point you linked your identities together, like on a web site where you entered your name and then used the google voice number instead of your real number. or you used it for your wechat or kakao. or that you linked the numbers yourself (like to receive voice mail) loom inside google voice, at linked numbers.
its very simple for someone with access to the cell net to connect the dots, or for someone working at google. or one of the millions of customers google sells your info to. I could go on and on.
I use a burner, because i feel its much safer. but if you insist on trusting apple and google, you should change your number and email frequently.

There are a few apps out there - some that are specifically used by providers to compile information on clients. I found my number on one - it was eaither truecaller or Mr Number. Clearly a sugar baby that didn't work out. I know there's another one as a couple providers siad to me the "I am a real estate agent and work in flushing". Neither of those things are true but I may have told a cover story to someone that entered the info into an app.

Little things to be aware of. Like the waiter that hands you back your check with your credit card and says "Thanks Mr. Jones - come back soon Robert".

The TV in Marriott Hotels: your name is on the screen when you turn the TV on.

Uber when the driver has his turn by turn on says "Drop Robert Jones off a half mile on the right"

But those screening apps are shared by legit people for other purposes. So you may have used the burner to take care of something.

My money's on Google and/or your smartphone "helpfully" linking your contact information through the app. I wouldn't trust Google Voice to be all that private in general, since it's linked directly to your actual phone number (on Google's end).

The safest option is a separate burner phone device, but it's inconvenient to carry around and hard to explain why you have a tracfone in addition to your normal phone, if discovered. A good middle ground is a burner app solution like Hushed. Unlike Google Voice, it does all of the data transfer over your internet connection, without binding to the actual phone number. This is still not as secure as a tracfone paid with cash, since you have to pay Hushed in the app store, but it's pretty good.

Like what the others previously stated. I know for a fact that Google links your account name to the phone number. I learned this after I had to previously transfer over my Verizon landlines to Google voice after receiving the notice the Verizon was no longer supporting their copper lines and forcing everyone to switch everyone over to Fios. If the provider you called is also using Google voice or a line that provides caller id support, your name will appear as the caller along with the number.

Wow. So what do you do now? For lots of reason a burner is not going to work for me.

Is there another option you have found useful?
