Making an effort, no matter how seemingly small or ineffective, can and often does make a HUGE difference. I have met a handful of FOB girls, usually at the old San Francisco spa on Arch street (affiliated with Saigon). Sometimes its just a way-station, with the best girls moving on to Manhattan and working for top dollar, while others quickly learn that they're simply not suited to this line of work and are either sent back home, or to a back of the house job at a restaurant. One girl that I met, "Sofia" , agreed to see me the following morning at 9am (they opened at 3 PM. ) I cooked her breakfast, and brought it to her along with some fresh fruit , including a kiwi that i cut in a zipper pattern , that makes quite an elaborate presentation when opened. She was quite happy with it, so much so that she put it on her We-Chat page for her friends back home to see, captioned "My first American boyfriend made me breakfast today". We spent the much of the day together, with the manager knocking on the door at 2:30pm to tell her to get ready for work. I am convinced that had I not been able to speak any Chinese, that that fun short lived "relationship" never could have happened. She landed at Osaka in midtown Manhattan, where she met a well to do Banker dude, got out of the business, and is married with two kids. We're still friends on We-Chat, and my wife knows that we met at the spa, but supposedly when I was there fixing the water heater !

Met while you were fixing a water heater. Lol. I just learned how to say water heater. Maybe it will pay dividends.

Korean gets more mileage for the effort of learning it. Koreans are more impressed than Chinese or Japanese when a westerner can converse with them. Learning the written language is easier too since it consists of 26 letters that represent sounds withvowels and consonants. I can go for hours or days a time using Korean only.

It's also worth noting that the two loudest complainers about trying to speak Mandarin both have contributed no reviews and can not read private details of others' reviews. At a minimum, it appears they don't really care about reviews, and maybe they're just here to argue.
