No Offense to Car Salespeople (he/she/him/her/they/whatever/no offense). Pre pamdemic, Car Sales people were the absolute scum of the earth. Post Pandemic, they have become 10 times worse. They have no cars to sell, but they want a $5,000 (or more) deposit on a new car, they cannot tell you what it's going to cost since it's not yet on the lot, but when it comes, they will tell you the price, and you have 24 hours to pick it up or you forfeit your deposit. REALLY? Do I go to Shop Rite, fill up my cart with groceries, then checkout and pray how much the butter or the carrots are going to ring up for? We are suckers, for sure. The car people never want this to end. They will milk this shortage for as long as possible, It's insane, for sure. I'm in NJ, perhaps other parts of the country are a little different. Thoughts? I've looked at buying a Toyota, Jeep Cherokee, Lexus, and that's all I get. Scum Car Sales People. And they are proud to be the scum of the earth. I know, they are taking advantage, like the cost of homes, jet skiis, used cars, whatever.

Terrible time to purchase a vehicle right now. Car salesman are bad, then you get to sit down with the real scumbag, the finance person. I currently own two vehicles, bought them both new a few years ago and paid both off, I wouldn’t even consider purchasing a new one currently.

Just stopped by the dealership yesterday to voice my concern on a backordered truck. Getting mixed messages from the Manufacturer. After 8 brand new purchases over my vehicle buying experience from the same manufacturer you would think that would count for something. Not only no ,but FUCK NO.

A friend of mine has been in the auto industry for over 30 years , mostly as a controller for dealerships and as a consultant . He said to me wait at least a year when I told him air was thinking of splurging on a new car and asking his opinion on what I should buy . He also said it is a terrible time to buy now.

I'm not buying a car right now, but i think if i was - i would go that carmax style route and buy something 1-2 years old. it's a lot less hassle than traditional car sales. you can do a 24 hour drive. the sales people dont come with you on test drives. and then they have a 30 day refund if you dont like the car and bring it in with 1500 miles in basically same shape. Its a lot better than going into a new dealer and getting boned over when they will have the car you want on the lot, and having to fork over firstborn children.

Use a car broker to place an order for a new car. They work with dealers that have prearranged discounts in place for quick orders. Depending on the make, you can currently place an order for as much as 9% or more off MSRP.

Idk who your connect is, but even brokers are subject to dealer markup right now
I've only asked about Honda and Toyota, but a 2-6k markup is standard

I bought from Carvana. 30 minutes from start to when I owned the car. No bs. No sales games.

However I can’t recommend them. Beyond the initial purchase, registration was a total mess, and I’m not happy with the car itself. But it gets me where I need to go. As Steve Martin said all you really need are 4 f’ing wheels and a seat.

So I guess pick and choose your battles.

Anyone considering purchasing an EV? There is also a longer than usual wait time to get car parts, not to mention inflated costs.
There is an incredibly long wait time just to get the car.

A Rivian has a 2 1/2year wait.

Read somewhere that even when supply chains are back to normal, don’t look for car prices to come back to where you were negotiating from dealer invoice.

I bought a car December 2020.
did my homework...
watched youtube videos of how to deal with salesman , and not get ripped off.
turns out was a waste of time......their website had 2 diferent prices....
one price for making monthly payments....
and another price if you want to pay in full.

there were diferent rebates depending on which you choose.

more bargaining leeway on monthly payments of course.

I chose full payment . still was able to bargain a little off.
honestly I was off my goal by about 500 to 750 bucks. but knowing I don't have to make monthly payments is worth it.
they still had me in there ALL DAY just to take it home,
got there like 10am....didnt leave until 8pm
mind you i paid in full.

p.s. they dont like when you pay in full. they had their nasty face all day until i drove off.

Supply and demand. There’s no cars available. So it’s a crazy market right now.

I’ve been waiting for almost a year now for a 911 that I ordered. I saw an M8 that I liked in Long Island, called up the dealer on a Thursday and told him I’ll stop by on Saturday. Guess what? Somebody already stopped by and bought it. lol.

Many of the Porsche owners are driving their new 911s for less than a year and then flipping it for a profit. smh.

It's an old book, but Don't Get Taken Every Time, by Remar Sutton, is what I relied on and got a good enough deal that the salesperson quit after I bought my car. Know how to research real costs, know how to figure how much cash your loan total is actually worth, and what they will pay (not allow, but actually pay) for your old car. After you've done your research on what car you want, go in toward the end of the month, when salespeople are trying make sales count. Bonus points if it's a hour before closing and it's been raining all day. Never say a number out loud. Watch: They won't. They will write a number down, spin the paper around and slide it toward you. If you think you can save money, cross out their figure and write your own. If the salesperson says, they can't do that, you got pretty close. In as non-argumentative a way as possible, demonstrating through your tone of voice that you acknowledge they might be right, suggest they show the figure to their manager. The response I got was, "OK, if purchased today". I figured that was as good a deal as I would get, so pulled the trigger. Been happy with the car, including all aspects of the purchase, ever since.

This strategy worked before Covid when lots were full of cars. Now? There’s nothing in the lots.
